I have wanted to learn how to do handstands for a long time. I thought handstands would be a fun thing to do, but I never ventured to try them. It was always one of those: “Oh that would be cool” thoughts that I never turned into action. At the beginning of 2020, I decided this would be the year I started to train to do handstands. I had done gymnastics for a few years as a kid, so I had some background in the technique, but I also hadn’t done a handstand in over 25 years! So, I started by practicing hollow body holds, crow pose, and handstands against the wall to build strength and balance. I slowly worked my way to freestanding handstands.

2020 also ended up being the year that I decided to begin calisthenics (bodyweight training) beyond handstands. Since the gyms were closed because of the pandemic, I also decided to purchase a set of calisthenics dip bars in the summer. I got the Derek Simnett Limited Edition Lebert Fitness Equalizers (Black XL) and have been having a blast experimenting with them!

Check out the video to see a sped up version of my current at home fitness routine doing beginner calisthenics using my dip bars and practicing my handstands. Let me know if you’re interested in seeing a normal speed version with a voiceover as more of a ‘follow along with me’ style video. I can definitely do that if you’re interested!
I have a deep appreciation for being able to move my body and exercise after experiencing years of chronic pain and fatigue. Now that I’m healthy and well, I want to move my body daily. Movement is so important to me. Moving my body makes me feel healthy, strong, fit, and happy. I encourage you to move your body too! Move however YOU like to move. Whether it’s walking, dancing, yoga, swimming, lifting weights or any other activity or sport you enjoy. I also encourage you to branch out and try something new IF you want to. Keep moving and have fun! Let me know about some of your current favourite activities.
